Alexander McCall Smith never disappoints–his characters are wonderful and I’m always sorry when the book ends. This was one of his best.

Was McCall Smith bitten by a dog, once, suffering emotional and physical damage, and causing him to hate the canine species?
He’s never been much on dogs, but in this book, his heartless disposal of a character’s unwanted puppies flummoxed me so much that I flipped through the rest of the book, thinking I’d been mistaken — that a wiser and more humane denouement was planned. Nope. I guess he thought he was being funny.
So back to the library with “Scones.” At least my disillusionment with the author saved me from wasting my time on any further mysogynistic plot developments regarding Bertie and his mom, and any more nattering by overprivileged Edinburghians.
It may have even put me off any further attention to the adventures of the African detective.

Fans of the 44 Scotland Street Series will not want to miss this latest chapter in the lives of Matthew, Angus, ankle loving Cyrill, Domenica, and sweet maligned Bertie. Whimsical, and abounding with charm, McCall Smith once again passes on bits of worldly wisdom in the guise of his wise beyond their years characters. For the first time some of the musings felt a bit like they could of easily come out of the mouth of Precious Ramotswe, yet it doesn’t take away any of the delightful appeal of this seemingly endless serial.
