For the modern, digital-age traveler unwilling to plow through a few hundred pages of traditional narrative in a travel guide, the “Eyewitness Travel Top 10 Scotland” might be just the thing. In only 160 pages plus some handy foldout maps, this pocket-sized guide cuts to the very best Scotland has to offer in a format loaded with pictures, graphics, minimal text, and plenty of websites for further research.
“Top Ten Scotland” is somewhat derivative of the longer and more detailed “DK Eyewitness Scotland Guide”, but with its own unique format. For the first-time visitor and the general traveler, the guide offers the ten best things to see in all of Scotland, then drills down on some top ten lists by region and category. Among the categories: castles, gardens, fishing spots, golf courses, distilleries, Highland traditions, attractions for children, restaurants, and some best kept secrets. Other categories include best museums, best long distance walking routes, and best Munro’s (mountains) for climbing.
“Top Ten Scotland” includes some practical travel information on when and how to go to Scotland, and how to get around once you get there. The guide itself is nicely organized and indexed, profusely illustrated and easily portable. “Top Ten Scotland” is very highly recommended as a minimalist but surprisely complete guide for the traveler who prefers his or her information “fast and furious.”
